Jamaica Minnesota Smile

"Our mission was to improve the smiles and health of Jamaican children."

With its balmy temperatures, turquoise sea, and lush green vegetation, Port Antonio, Jamaica, has all the elements of paradise. The warm and friendly people complete the picture. But they lack consistent access to dental care. We were asked by the non-profit group, Jamaica Minnesota Organization, to develop and implement a plan to bring dental care to the children in Jamaica.

It was a daunting task to consider, but one of our hygienists, Colleen Chandler, spearheaded the Jamaica Minnesota Smile project. We were challenged to develop the plan, raise the funds, buy the equipment, and recruit other dental professionals. In October 2005, Dr. Edlund, with more than half the staff of Woodbury Dental Care, embarked for Jamaica. They were accompanied by another dentist and oral surgeon who were committed to the project.

Our mission was to improve the smiles and health of Jamaican children by providing dental services and education. During our ten-day stay our team treated 355 children, teachers, and staff members. The trip was very meaningful to us-and to them.

"What excellent work you all did here... we are very grateful and we are still talking about you. The work you did here was not just to provide dental service ... you actually inspired a large number of young people, many of whom have set more ambitious goals for themselves as a result of association with you. You left behind a grateful community."

-John Blackwood, Port Antonio Businessman and Community Leader

We hope to return again and encourage other dental professionals to join us in providing a repeatable, ongoing service to Jamaica's school children. To do so, we turn once again to friends, family, and patients to support us in our efforts.
